Fostering Connection, Meaning and Purpose in Every Stage of Life
Our Mission
Fostering Connection, Meaning and Purpose in Every Stage of Life
Senior Community Engagement (SCE) is a nonprofit organization committed to enriching the lives of older adults within senior living communities. We work to cultivate environments where every individual feels a profound sense of belonging, purpose, and connection.
Our mission is to transform the experience of aging by nurturing spaces for engaging conversation, meaningful reflection, and vibrant connection, bridging generations and experiences. We do this through the existing communities where we have Companion Conversation Groups and through our Companions on the Journey Trainings.
Our foundation rests on the belief that every individual, regardless of age or ability, possesses inherent worth and deserves to thrive. We collaborate closely with residents, staff, families, and volunteers to build communities where dignity, shared purpose, and mutual support are the cornerstones of daily life.
We believe it's time to redefine what aging truly means, and we are here to champion and support that inspiring transformation.
Why We Exist
Isolation, ageism, and ableism represent critical, often overlooked, challenges facing older adults today.
At SCE, we hold a deep conviction that aging is not a process of decline, but a rich and conscious journey of growth. Our innovative programs are designed to:
● Combat loneliness by fostering deep, meaningful social bonds and genuine connections.
● Elevate aging as a dynamic period of purpose, profound reflection, and boundless creativity.
● Create safe, compassionate spaces for open and honest conversations about life's ultimate transitions, including death and dying.
● Empower every member of the community—residents, staff, family members, and volunteers—to actively participate in and contribute to collective community care.
● Challenge and transform cultural narratives that devalue elders or diminish their invaluable contributions to society.
We believe it's time to redefine what aging truly means, and we are here to champion and support that inspiring transformation.
Our Program
Meaningful Conversations and the People Who Make Them Happen
Senior Community Engagement brings older adults together through Companion Conversation Groups and equips people to carry this work into their own communities through Companions on the Journey Training.
Our hope is to help you develop the skills, relationships, and support to offer meaningful conversation wherever you feel drawn to serve. You may already have a senior community in mind, visit a friend or family member, or want to explore volunteering somewhere new. You may hope to lead a group, assist with gatherings, or deepen your one-on-one visits. You might also work or volunteer in communities where this training will help enhance your skills. Each is a valuable way to participate.
Our recommended starting point is Companions on the Journey Training. The training provides a shared foundation in listening, inclusion, dignity, and healthy boundaries. From there, we help participants consider where they might serve, work with community partners to establish gatherings, and find ongoing support to sustain the work. Register now.
You are also welcome to explore before deciding. We currently facilitate conversations in three senior communities, where arranged visits can offer a firsthand experience of the gatherings. There may also be opportunities to assist with existing groups. Contact us to discuss your interests and what is available; you do not need to commit to the training simply to begin a conversation with us.
Our Method
We work with older adults and community partners to create welcoming conversations that
support belonging, meaning, purpose, and connection. Through Guided Conversations, we
facilitate gatherings with care for accessibility and each person’s dignity. Through Companions
on the Journey, we help others practice these skills and find their role in leading, assisting, or
visiting one-on-one.
